Is it an Acer saccharum, Acer rubrum, or Acer palmatum? Given each tree has different traits and growing requirements, it’s important to ask for the right maple tree (common name) to plant in your landscape. Join horticulturist Zannah Crowe for her presentation “Botanical Names – What’s in a Name” on Thursday, September 24 at 7:00 pm at the Mequon Nature Preserve. Crowe will teach us how to decode the hidden descriptions, origins, and relationships of plants. “A plant’s ‘scientific name’ can provide helpful clues about the plant,” Crowe said, “everything from flower color to leaf structure to growing conditions.” Crowe’s passion for gardening began in childhood, planting flowers alongside her father. She holds a degree in Landscape Architecture from UW-Madison and has been employed in the Green Industry for over 40 years. She managed the perennial plant division of a rare plant nursery in Connecticut for 12 years, was executive director of a community gardening program in West Bend for three years, managed the garden center at Monches Farm for 20 years, and is currently employed with W. & E. Radtke wholesale perennial nursery in Germantown. At home Crowe tends a 1.5 acre property with her Landscape Architect husband, Bob.
