Description
In a fabric collage of simple symmetrical shapes, you will learn the basics of Jane's accessible machine applique techniques. We will cut into stabilized fat fabric quarters and use the resulting shapes in a unique collage composition. This will also provide a chance to sharpen your design and machine embroidery skills.
Supplies Needed:
Drawing materials: Micron pen, tracing paper roll or large pad.
Sewing basics: scissors, pins, etc.
Sewing machine in good working order
Open-toed embroidery foot - optional, #20 Bernina
Aleene’s Tacky Glue
Masking tape, Xacto type knife with #11 blade (optional)
Fusible interfacing: white, non-woven, 4-6 yds. (Shir Tailor by Pellon is best)
Wonder Under or some kind of paper backed iron-on adhesive, half yard
Rotary cutter, mat and ruler
Fabrics: at least six fat quarters backed with fusible interfacing: white, non-woven (Shir Tailor by Pellon is best). Solids, batiks and/or simple prints in colors that you like together. I recommend including some contrasting colors, as well.
Threads: Basic 50wt sewing thread to match your fabrics and matching bobbins.
Extension cord, multiple-outlet strip, adaptors (if necessary)
Digital camera-optional, but very useful
After a varied career in the design world, Jane began to quilt in 1980. She found that these "soft paintings" satisfied the draftsman, the craftsman and the artist in her. Consequently, she is now a dedicated, some say obsessed, quilt artist and fabric designer.
Her art quilts have been shown in many national and international exhibits, including Quilt National 1989 through 2005 and Contemporary American Quilts, the first major exhibit of American art quilts in England. Her quilt "Willow" was named as One of the One Hundred Best American Quilts of the Century. Jane is also the author of "The Quilted Garden". The book includes twenty years of her work and exercises for making nature-inspired quilts.
Jane's love her historic decorative arts can be seen in all facets of her work, but it is especially evident in the exuberant fabric she is currently designing for FreeSpirits Fabrics. Her designs are oversized, and they are created for quilts, wearables and home decorating. Her latest book, "Patchwork Sassaman Style" beautifully illustrates her fabric in action.
