Description
Kandy Gibson started throwing pottery in high school in the early 70’s. Clay has always been her main focus, but she also spends time painting and drawing. Kandy graduated with a Bachelor of Art degree from The Ohio State University in 1979 with a focus in clay and education. She was a member of the Student League of Independent Potters and participated in many shows throughout her college years. After earning a Master of Education degree, Kandy spent most of her professional career teaching special needs children and her summers teaching pottery at a residential boy's camp. In 1994 she began her career as a school principal and found herself having less time for her art. It wasn’t until 2008 when Kandy put an addition onto her house, giving her a dedicated clay studio, that she began playing in clay every day.
Gibson is a utilitarian potter who creates pots that are visually pleasing and unique in character, but also useful in everyday life. Each piece of stoneware pottery reflects her enjoyment for throwing, carving, sketching, embellishing, creating and using. Most of her pieces are wheel-thrown. In 2008 she joined the Cedarburg Artists Guild and started participating in art fairs, studio tours and gallery shows. She participates in many workshops, always learning new ways to enhance her work. Kandy has been an Artist in Residence and enjoys sharing her knowledge with other various learners. She is an avid biker and hiker and spends many hours outside. She sees nature as the prime teacher of the arts. Her forms are usually organic in nature, which stems from her love of the balance observed in nature, and her personal preference for a fluid line. Currently retired from public education (2015), Kandy continues to focus on clay as her full-time retirement fun.
Stop in at the Cedarburg Cultural Center and meet the artist; Kandy will be demonstrating her pottery work on March 1, 4, 8, 9, 15, 16, 18, 22, 23: 11 am-2 pm.
