Ozaukee County Master Gardeners October Presentation

For Immediate Release: An In-Depth Look at Nature’s Calendar with National Phenology Network Director “Phenology is all about timing – when trees leaf out, flowers bloom, birds migrate, animals bear young and hibernate – and it is everywhere around us,” reports Dr. Theresa Crimmins. Crimmins will be presenting “Introduction to Phenology with Special Focus on Wisconsin” on Thursday, October 22 at 7:00 pm via Zoom. Crimmins continues, “seasonal events quietly but steadily occur in response to fluctuations in daylength, temperatures, and rainfall patterns, and these events are threaded through our daily lives, shaping our experiences and perceptions. As such, the timing of seasonal activity is being affected by rapidly changing climate conditions, with significant ecological and economic impacts.” In her presentation, Crimmins will share a bit of what we know about how phenology is changing and why this matters, with information specific to Wisconsin. She will also share practical information about how you can participate in documenting the timing of seasonal life cycle events – both for your own benefit and for the good of the environment. Crimmins is the Director of the USA National Phenology Network and an Associate Professor in the School of Natural Resources and the Environment at the University of Arizona, where she has published over 80 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. She works enthusiastically to grow Nature’s Notebook and cultivate appreciation for phenology among scientists and non-scientists alike – a mission evident in her TEDx talk and her book, “Phenology”, recently published by MIT Press. Her science communication has reached wide audiences through outlets including Scientific American, The Hill, Eos, Nautilus, and Popular Science, as well as appearances on NPR, PBS, The Weather Channel, and Fox Weather. This free virtual talk is sponsored by Ozaukee Master Gardeners. Registration is required. Visit www.ozaukeemastergardeners.org to sign up.
